Governor Ritter applauds $14 million clean coal grants
Gov. Ritter congratulated two local companies for winning $14 million in clean coal grants from the U.S. Department of Energy for advanced technologies in capturing carbon dioxide from coal combustion. ADA Environmental Solutions in Littleton and ION Engineering in Boulder were among only 10 companies and research institutions nationwide chosen for the awards that aim to reduce carbon dioxide emissions at coal plants.
"Colorado companies and research institutions continue to lead the country in cutting-edge technologies and innovation that are helping to create a cleaner environment for generations to come," said Gov. Ritter. "I congratulate ADA Environmental Solutions and ION Engineering for winning these important grants that will create jobs and advance our New Energy Economy."
The two Colorado grants and eight projects in other states are funded with a total of $67 million from the federal government. The projects will focus on carbon capture systems that will increase efficiency and cut electricity costs at existing and new power plants.
"Charting a path toward clean coal is essential to achieving our goals of providing clean energy, creating American jobs, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It will also help position the United States as a leader in the global clean energy race," said Energy Secretary Steven Chu.
