DIA posts second-busiest April in history
Passenger traffic at Denver International Airport for April continued the positive growth that DIA has seen since the start of 2010. The airport saw its second-busiest April in history (April 2008 was the busiest) with 4,077,549 passengers traveling through the airport, an increase of 3.5 percent over the same month last year. The first four months of growth brought the year-to-date passenger traffic to 16,004,914 an increase of 568,342 passengers, or 3.7 percent, over the same period in 2009.
Looking at 2008, which was a benchmark year for the airport, passenger numbers for April are only off slightly from April 2008 when 4,078,112 passengers traveled through DIA – a difference of only 563 passengers. Looking at the first four months of 2008 versus the first four months of 2010, passenger traffic is down slightly at 1.6 percent.
“While we are pleased with our continued growth over last year, we really need to look at how things compare to 2008 to gauge whether or not we are really seeing a rebound,” said Kim Day, Manager of Aviation for Denver International Airport. “The numbers for April are encouraging and we are certainly moving in the right direction. Memorial Day travel looked pretty busy judging by the amount of people using the airport last week, so we are hopeful for a busy summer travel season.”
April also saw an increase in flight operations, which rose 4.1 percent from 49,087 last year to 51,122 in 2010. Cargo saw a slight increase of 6.9 percent with 45,178,854 tons of total cargo handled in April compared to 42,255,424 tons during the same month last year.
