Gov. Ritter applauds $91 million in clean coal grants

Gov. Ritter congratulated three local companies for winning $91.3 million in clean coal grants from the U.S. Department of Energy for advanced techniques in capturing and storing carbon dioxide from fossil fuel combustion. The $71 million award to Eltron Research and Development Inc. in Boulder is the largest grant to date to a Colorado company from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

"The Recovery Act is accelerating the advancement of cutting-edge, clean coal technologies by Colorado companies to create a cleaner environment for our country and our children," said Gov. Ritter. "Congratulations to Eltron Research and Development, ADA Environmental Solutions and the North American Power Group for winning these multi-million dollar grants that will create jobs and advance our New Energy Economy."

The three Colorado grants are among 22 awards in 15 states totaling $575 million announced today by the Department of Energy for carbon capture and storage research and development.

  • $71,377,413 Eltron Research and Development in Boulder. The Recovery Act grant will decrease development time by about three years of a hydrogen transport membrane technology to cost-effectively separate hydrogen from shifted coal-derived syngas.
  • $15 million ADA Environmental Solutions in Littleton. The grant will fund the design, construct and operation of a 1 MW-equivalent gas flow pilot-scale test unit to evaluate the performance and cost of an advanced solid sorbent CO2 capture technology.
  • $5 million North American Power Group in Greenwood Village. The grant will pay for the Two Elk Energy Park Carbon Site Characterization Project, which will involve drilling a series of shallow wells and one deep well in Wyoming.
